In September 2004 the Tomography Department of the Russian Cardiology Research Center has transferred its medical imaging workflow to the UniPACS system. UniPACS (Universal PACS) is a fully-functional system for storing, exchanging, analyzing, and viewing medical images (Picture Archiving and Communication System, PACS). UniPACS uniquely blends simplicity, efficiency and wide applicability; during the 5 years since its conception, it has been FDA-approved, showcased at several international conferences. Functionally, UniPACS consists of several modules. The server module is the backbone of the centralized imaging workflow between the modalities (MR, CT, US) and the viewing workstations. UniPACS diagnostic workstation, installed in several locations at our center, takes care of the image review and dictation. Diagnostic workstations also provide our clinicians with remote image access, from home PCs and remote networks. Finally, UniPACS Web module streams medical images online, to any Internet-enabled computer. In particular, it is used to run our teleradiology projects. On the technical side, UniPACS installs on any Windows PC, and takes less than 3 MB. Networked digital modalities (CT, MR, US) are the only requirement for the UniPACS installation. The system is cost efficient: we were able to deploy it without any additional equipment purchases.
